Interracial Relationships in the United States

The 1967 Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia finally ushered in an end to various insidious and disgusting state-level anti-"miscegenation" laws in the United States. 

In convicting the Lovings of committing felony marriage, Judge Leon M. Bazile, a most degenerate and vile idiot, famously opined:

Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And, but for the interference with his arrangement, there would be no cause for such marriage. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.

 Such arrant nonsense.  If Almighty God has any sense of justice at all, then this loathsome creature

certainly has his eternal place in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone. It is absolutely ludicrous that such an ignorant, dishonorable reprobate could become a judge, even in a backwater state like Virginia.  For one thing, a judge in the United States is supposed to base his decision solely upon the applicable laws and legal arguments presented during a case.  The First Amendment precludes any sort of religious considerations from weighing in upon a legal decision.  For another thing, what sort of cockamamie religion states that God "did not intend for the races to mix?"  Certainly not any form of Christianity.  Timothy, one of Christianity's "Founding Fathers", had a Greek father and a Jewish mother. Hell, even Moses married a Black woman, and Yahweh was cool with it.  Numbers 12:

And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.  And they said, "Hath the Lord indeed spoken only by Moses? Hath he not spoken also by us?" And the Lord heard it.

Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. And the Lord spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, "Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation." And they three came out.

And the Lord came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth.  And he said, "Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.  My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.  With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the Lord shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?"

And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them; and he departed.  And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous. And Aaron said unto Moses, "Alas, my lord, I beseech thee, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned.  Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he cometh out of his mother's womb."

And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, "Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee."

And the Lord said unto Moses, "If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again."

And Miriam was shut out from the camp seven days: and the people journeyed not till Miriam was brought in again.  And afterward the people removed from Hazeroth, and pitched in the wilderness of Paran.

What Judge Bazile did to the Lovings was a lot worse than what Miriam had done, which amounted to nothing more than some stupid, idle gossip, but which Yahweh nonetheless took quite seriously.  This ignorant, fuckwit of a judge obviously possessed nothing but contempt for the Constitution of the United States of America, and probably never even bothered to read the fucking Bible.  Moreover, just look at what kind of ridiculous garbage appears in Virginia law:

Section 20-54 of the Virginia Code provides:

Intermarriage prohibited; meaning of term "white persons." -- It shall hereafter be unlawful for any white person in this State to marry any save a white person, or a person with no other admixture of blood than white and American Indian. For the purpose of this chapter, the term "white person" shall apply only to such person as has no trace whatever of any blood other than Caucasian; but persons who have one-sixteenth or less of the blood of the American Indian and have no other non-Caucasic blood shall be deemed to be white persons. All laws heretofore passed and now in effect regarding the intermarriage of white and colored persons shall apply to marriages prohibited by this chapter

Va.Code Ann. § 20-54 (1960 Repl. Vol.).

The exception for persons with less than one-sixteenth "of the blood of the American Indian" is apparently accounted for, in the words of a tract issued by the Registrar of the State Bureau of Vital Statistics, by "the desire of all to recognize as an integral and honored part of the white race the descendants of John Rolfe and Pocathontas. . . ."

"White" Virginians think that they are so fucking great, just for being "White?"  As John the Baptist said to the Pharisees and Sadducees:  "think not to say within yourselves, 'We have Abraham to our father': for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham."  God can make "White" people out of stones as easily as he could make Jews.

In 1958, Robert Stuckert estimated that over 28 million "White" persons in the United States had some Black African ancestry, which meant that the majority of persons with African ancestry were classified as "White."  If DNA testing had been available at the time, then quite a lot of "White" Southerners would have been compelled to relinquish the privileges that came with being "White."  Which would have meant giving up their homes, their jobs, their schools, having to sit in the back of the bus, having to drink from the "Colored" drinking fountain, having to sit in "Colored" waiting rooms, and not being able to eat in restaurants.  And, having to be perfectly deferential to "White" people at all times, while facing the constant threat of being lynched.

Most of Sally Hemings' children identified themselves as "White" and lived in "White" communities after their manumission.  Perhaps the most important and influential book in American history was Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, which brought into sharp focus the severe brutality of slavery in the United States.  Mark Twain wrote an entertaining story, The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson, about two half-brothers, born the same day, one slave and one free, and who were practically identical in appearance. Southern reviewers, like Martha McCulloch Williams, were quite outraged by the work:

...."Pudd'nhead Wilson" is more than stupid....it is at once malicious and misleading. So much so, indeed, that involuntarily one recalls the gentleman who, it was said, "went to his memory for his wit, and his imagination for his facts."

It certainly seems to me that Mr. Clemens must have imagined all the local color of his tale. It has to do with Dawson's Landing, a small Missouri town on the Mississippi, populated largely with F. F. V.'s, all of whom are slave-holders, as are the rest of the inhabitants. Right here I wish to ask why it is that the Southern man who has an honest and decent pride in the fact that he comes of good stock fares so ill at the hands of certain literary gentlemen? Bret Harte gives us Colonel Starbottle as his type. Mr. Cable has won fame and fortune and the heart of the whole North by demonstrating to its entire satisfaction how heartlessly and continually all his well-born gentlemen overstep the color line. Last of all, Mark Twain has set himself the task of showing how impossible it is for a man to have a great-grandfather and, at the same time, any regard for the Decalogue.

Perhaps the gentlemen are bent on gleaning the full harvest of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Perhaps, too, they are wise in so doing. In my seven years North, I have more than once been asked by people who regarded themselves as very well informed "if there were still in the South any pure blacks at all, or any pure-blooded whites?" At first such questioning made me angry. Later, I have come to recognize it as the legitimate outcome of the deliverances of Mr. Cable and his school. Now that Mark Twain has come under their banner, the impression will doubtless become more than ever current. For he has -- and has deserved -- the widest public of any living American writer. And it is a melancholy fact that the sheep instinct of humanity is so strong as to make it follow en masse into any pasture of opinion where he may lead. A still more melancholy fact is the inability of many folk to judge a thing with eyes blinded by the glamour of a great reputation...

I suspect that people of purely African descent are relatively rare in the African-American population.  I suppose it is a fair question: "are there, in the South, (not counting recent immigrants) any pure-blooded Whites?"  Particularly in light of the recent disclosure concerning this racist idiot, Craig Cobb:

To think that Mr. Cobb showed up at Rosa Parks' funeral, just to make videos of people reacting to his yelling of ludicrous malarchy like "Rosa Parks was a shitskin communist," and "I'm here to celebrate her death!"  Well, Mr. Cobb is going to have to move to the back of the bus, now, and sit there with the other "shitskins."  A little over 150 years ago, this "nigger" could have been abducted and sold down the river.  Mr. Cobb also apparently suffers from some sort of sexual dysfunction, as he failed even to woo a wife in Estonia.  But, seriously, who wants to marry a self-loathing Negro, even in Estonia?

A really nasty sex tourist from America (of Middle Eastern descent) has arrived in Tartu, Estonia. He came from Latvia after staying there a month or two. His goal is to lure into sex as many Estonian women as possible, especially very young girls. His name is Daryush Valizedeh, nickname - Roosh, and he is a pick up artist who believes women should be treated "like garbage". This includes beautiful, young white women of Baltic and Nordic descent.

The problem here is not sex itself, or travel for sex as such, but the guy's attitude - he has no respect for women and believes it is ok to manipulate them, use them and then denigrate them. He thinks it's ok to use the most beautiful women in the world and treat them like garbage.

Also, this person is not white which makes it even more problematic...

Mr. Valizadeh is half-Iranian and half-Armenian, and he enjoyed considerably better luck with the Estonian ladies than did Mr. Cobb.  If the White Nationalists choose to accept the US Census Bureau's definition of "White":  "A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa", then Mr. Valizadeh meets the official standards of being "White."  If the White Nationalists prefer Hitler's criteria: the Nazis esteemed the Iranians as "pure-blooded Aryans", with full "Aryan" privileges. Iranians were completely exempt from the restrictions of the Nuremberg Racial Laws.

As for Estonia and the other Baltic countries: Generalplan Ost called for the local population to be killed, deported, enslaved or "Germanized", and for 10 million "ethnic Germans" to be moved in after the area was cleansed.  Estonians were clearly less "Aryan", and therefore less human, than Iranians. 

German soldiers engaged in quite a lot of sexual violence, particularly in Eastern Europe.

While the American White Nationalists claim that they dislike the idea of an American of Iranian descent seducing Eastern European women, the Nazis might have invited this fellow to breed with Norwegian girls, to produce some prestigious Lebensborn babies.  The Nazis certainly wouldn't have begrudged his boning a few women in the Soviet Union.  What a bunch of fucking morons America's damned White Nationalists are.  They're such pathetic fools, that they don't even know whom they are supposed to hate.  If Hitler had won, then there wouldn't even be any Estonians in Estonia today.  But, Hitler lost, and so there are no "Aryans" living anywhere east of Germany any more.  Eastern Europe is now strictly for the non-"Aryans."

Anyway, ever since the Supreme Court set the issue straight, interracial marriage has been on the rise in the United States, as our citizens have heeded the divine call to fruitfulness and multiplication, as demonstrated in this table from the US Census Bureau.

The "Other" category probably includes American Indians, possibly Pacific Islanders, mixed-race people, and people who just didn't answer the "race" question.  The Census Bureau relies on people to self-report their race.  The Census Bureau isn't going to ask for a pedigree like the degenerate old Southern racists, and neither will the Census Bureau send a doctor to take cranial measurements, like the ridiculous Nazis.  The Census Bureau simply takes the respondent's word for it.  Even if Mr. Cobb wishes to maintain the fantasy that he is White, the Census Bureau isn't going to call him out on it.  Probably a lot of people who didn't answer the "race" question were people of Hispanic descent, as the Spanish translation of the word "race", raza, doesn't mean the same thing as the word "race" does to the Anglophone world.  A lot of people in Latin America are racially mixed.  While the United States had laws that prohibited "miscegenation", so as to preserve the privileges of White people over others (especially Blacks and American Indians), many Latin American countries were actively promoting racial mixing, usually with the goal of blanqueamiento, or "whitening" the general population.  At one extreme, José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia issued a decree that all White Paraguayans had to marry a person of another race, as a means of resolving the country's racial problems.

To get back to the United States, and for the sake of simplified analysis and discussion, I've removed the "Other" category from the above table, so that we are only looking at couples where both spouses self-identify as purebred, and either White, Black or Asian:

Asian women accounted for 6% of the total wives, but a whopping 42% of the wives in interracial marriages.

White Husbands with Asian wives made up 39% of all inter-racial marriages.

The second most common interracial mating is Black Men with White Wives: 29% of inter-racial pairs.

We have about 340,000 more married Asian women than men, about 252,000 more married Black men than women, and 88,000 more married White men than women. Percentage-wise, the situation seems more acute for Asian guys. For White women--88,000 is a drop in the bucket, since Whites are most numerous. For Black women: it is more like a cupfull in the bucket.  Especially Asian guys, but also Black women, seem to be getting the short end of the stick, as Asian women pursue White men, and White women chase after Black men.

One theory that seeks to explain this phenomenon has to do with the fact that average penis size varies by race:  Black men have the biggest, followed by White men, followed by Asians.  To back up this assertion: one survey showed that condoms made to international sizes were too big for Indian men.  South Africans, on the other hand, complained of condoms being too small for their massive appendages.

then perhaps many of the Asian women who chase after White men, and White women pursuing Black men, are at least partially motivated by the desire for a sausage upgrade.

In the June, 1903 issue of the prestigious journal Medicine: A Monthly Record of the World's Progress in Medicine and Surgery, pages 423-426, Dr. William Lee Howard published a rather fascinating (but revoltingly racist) article The Negro as a Distinct Ethnic Factor in Civilization.

Huxley once said: "Knowledge does not go beyond phenomena."  This aphorism does not hold good among the majority of those who write and talk on the "Negro Question", because few of these people have any distinct knowledge of the peculiar phenomena seen in the African race.  At least, it appears that the physiologic and anatomic facts--or phenomena--which prove the negro to be a distinct ethnic factor are either unknown or unrealized by those who attempt by schools and colleges to give the negro the ethical feeling of the Caucasian.  The attitude of complacent moralists, the preaching of far distant ascetics, and the Sunday-school advice of the New England maiden who would take the African to her bosom, would be amusing were it not for the serious conditions underlying the misunderstood facts.

The truth is that the negro of to-day, untrammeled and free from control, is rapidly showing atavistic tendencies.  He is returning to a state of savagery, and in his frequent attacks of sexual madness, his religious emotionalism, superstition, and indolence, is himself again--a savage.  This animalism, this innate character of the African, will demonstrate itself more and more as he is allowed the liberty of his sway of ancestral sexual impulses, and as long as moralists and sociologists of the "suppressive school" continue to remain purblind to the negro's dominant physiologic and psychologic organism.

The anatomical and physiological conditions of the African must be understood, his place in the anthropoligical scale realized, and his biologic basis accepted as being unchangeable by man before we can scientifically and humanely place this ethnic factor where it belongs.

Let if first be understood that there can never be any inter-racial relations of Caucasian and African, socially or sexually.  Any such relation is prevented by the great sexual, anatomical, and physiological differences, and any attempt at such relations means complexly ruinous results.The African is also unlike the Caucasian in secondary sexual characters, and this being so he can never be absolutely alike in the highest psychical processes.  These facts are ignored by those who would have the African brought into social relations with the white woman, and by those who ignorantly believe that a few years of Latin and Bible teaching will deprive him of periodical erethisms of the sexual centers.  When education and religious teaching change the biologic basis of his color it will also be able to change the anatomical and physiological reason for his sexuality and bestiality....

...It is useless for philanthropists, preachers, and editors in the north, or any other part of the country where the African is not understood or studied, to talk about school controlling his hereditary racial instincts.  His individual parts are unknown to such people...We must penetrate beneath superficial ideas, throw aside prudish philosophy, and open our eyes to anatomical and psychical facts if we wish to render justice to civilization.  Silence regarding sexual matters must give way to vocative statements, for it is by these unavoidable statements that we must be guided in dealing with this negro question....

...The belief that the African was capable of living as hygienically and morally as the Caucasian was the great mistake made by those who deal in abstract principles...

...Education as it is understood by the white man will never, in the full-blooded African, affect centers above those governing the animal instincts.  It is a fact observed by those who are in a position to study the negro that with the advent of puberty all intellectual developments ceases...With the advent of puberty the negro shows his genesic instincts to be the controlling factor in his life...In the increase of rape on white women we see the explosing of a long train of antecedent preparation.. The attacks on defenseless white women are evidences of racial instincts that are about as amenable to ethical culture as it is the inherent odor of the race....When education will reduce the large size of the negro's penis as well as bring about the sensitiveness of the terminal fibers which exist in the Caucasian, then will it also be able to prevent the African's birthright to sexual  madness and excess--from the Caucasian's point of view...

..."The free sexual life of the krall...has given the negro male a sexual development, anatomical and physiological, unapproached except among the lower animals" (Barringer).  The size of the penis as measured by Burton among many hundred negroes was found to be six inches, quiescent.  According to the general law, to which this is no exception, the genital organs of the male are in proper proportion, as regards size, to the dimensions of the female organs...

...No extent of education has produced in the present-day negro any ethical understanding of the fidelity of married life.  He has no code of ethics or morals to control adultery...

We see right away that Southern resentment of Northern "Liberals" and "Goody-goodies" was just as strong in 1903 as it is today, and as it was during the Emancipation era.  "Y'all don't have to live with any dirty, smelly niggers--so, don't go tellin' us how we should treat 'em!"

Although the image of a big, burly Black man, with a jumbo-sized penis, raping or seducing a sweet, delicate young White virgin does send a few shudders, in fairness, it should be pointed out that, over the past few centuries, there have probably been a heck of a lot more rapes of Black women by White men than the other way around.   Particularly during the days of slavery, when a master could rape or make a concubine of any slave he wanted.  Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers of our great nation, was, himself, the father of many of his own slaves, and started boning Sally Hemings when she was just 14 years old.  In her 1861 book Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, escaped slave Harriet Ann Jacobs wrote:

My master was, to my knowledge, the father of eleven slaves. But did the mothers dare to tell who was the father of their children? Did the other slaves dare to allude to it, except in whispers among themselves? No, indeed! They knew too well the terrible consequences..

Here is what the eminent orator, and probably the greatest figure in American history, Frederick Douglass, wrote of his parentage:

        My mother was named Harriet Bailey. She was the daughter of Isaac and Betsey Bailey, both colored, and quite dark. My mother was of a darker complexion than either my grandmother or grandfather.
        My father was a white man. He was admitted to be such by all I ever heard speak of my parentage. The opinion was also whispered that my master was my father; but of the correctness of this opinion, I know nothing; the means of knowing was withheld from me. My mother and I were separated when I was but an infant--before I knew her as my mother. It is a common custom, in the part of Maryland from which I ran away, to part children from their mothers at a very early age. Frequently, before the child has reached its twelfth month, its mother is taken from it, and hired out on some farm a considerable distance off, and the child is placed under the care of an old woman, too old for field labor. For what this separation is done, I do not know, unless it be to hinder the development of the child's affection toward its mother, and to blunt and destroy the natural affection of the mother for the child. This is the inevitable result.
        I never saw my mother, to know her as such, more than four or five times in my life; and each of these times was very short in duration, and at night. She was hired by a Mr. Stewart, who lived about twelve miles from my home. She made her journeys to see me in the night, travelling the whole distance on foot, after the performance of her day's work. She was a field hand, and a whipping is the penalty of not being in the field at sunrise, unless a slave has special permission from his or her master to the contrary--a permission which they seldom get, and one that gives to him that gives it the proud name of being a kind master. I do not recollect of ever seeing my mother by the light of day. She was with me in the night. She would lie down with me, and get me to sleep, but long before I waked she was gone. Very little communication ever took place between us. Death soon ended what little we could have while she lived, and with it her hardships and suffering. She died when I was about seven years old, on one of my master's farms, near Lee's Mill. I was not allowed to be present during her illness, at her death, or burial. She was gone long before I knew any thing about it. Never having enjoyed, to any considerable extent, her soothing presence, her tender and watchful care, I received the tidings of her death with much the same emotions I should have probably felt at the death of a stranger.
        Called thus suddenly away, she left me without the slightest intimation of who my father was. The whisper that my master was my father, may or may not be true; and, true or false, it is of but little consequence to my purpose whilst the fact remains, in all its glaring odiousness, that slaveholders have ordained, and by law established, that the children of slave women shall in all cases follow the condition of their mothers; and this is done too obviously to administer to their own lusts, and make a gratification of their wicked desires profitable as well as pleasurable; for by this cunning arrangement, the slaveholder, in cases not a few, sustains to his slaves the double relation of master and father.
        I know of such cases; and it is worthy of remark that such slaves invariably suffer greater hardships, and have more to contend with, than others. They are, in the first place, a constant offence to their mistress. She is ever disposed to find fault with them; they can seldom do any thing to please her; she is never better pleased than when she sees them under the lash, especially when she suspects her husband of showing to his mulatto children favors which he withholds from his black slaves. The master is frequently compelled to sell this class of his slaves, out of deference to the feelings of his white wife; and, cruel as the deed may strike any one to be, for a man to sell his own children to human flesh-mongers, it is often the dictate of humanity for him to do so; for, unless he does this, he must not only whip them himself, but must stand by and see one white son tie up his brother, of but few shades darker complexion than himself, and ply the gory lash to his naked back; and if he lisp one word of disapproval, it is set down to his parental partiality, and only makes a bad matter worse, both for himself and the slave whom he would protect and defend.
        Every year brings with it multitudes of this class of slaves....

In 2003, shortly after his death, it was revealed that Strom Thurmond, one of the 20th Century's most notorious segregationists, had fathered a mulatto girl with a 16-year-old Black servant at his parents' house.  He never publicly acknowledged his own daughter during his long lifetime.  If he had been a Black man impregnating a White girl in South Carolina:  the Black man would probably have been killed.  He certainly would not have proceeded to enjoy a long and prestigious political career.  One of Mr. Thurmond's famous quotes from his 1948 presidential run:

I wanna tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there's not enough troops in the army to force the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the nigger race into our theatres, into our swimming pools, into our homes, and into our churches.

 Referring back to Dr. Howard's article above: his many protestations concerning the size of the Black man's genitalia can only mean that Dr. Howard suffered from what Freud called "penis envy."

Given that it was White men who were making the rules, which were designed to keep White women away from the prize of a Black man's cock, we can only conclude that Dr. Howard and other White men were very much ashamed of the size of their own cocks, particularly compared to the impressive stature of the Black appendage.

White women had no say in the matter, and weren't asked their opinion.  If White women were really as repelled by the massive size and potency of the big Black dick as Dr. Howard thought that they should be, then there would have been no more need to fabricate any "anti-miscegenation" laws than there is to make a law against eating poo.  Dr. Howard contrives a lot of other excuses, and goes to a lot of effort to defame and denigrate the Black race, the same way that a girl puts down and slut-shames her rival for a boy's affection.  Dr. Howard could just as well have said "their dicks are bigger than ours, and we don't want our women to flock to the Black men, because, in a fair competition based on dick size, we would lose every time."  (Well, until Ron Jeremy showed up, anyway).  At least he would have been honest.  But, As John Lily said, "the rules of fair play do not apply in love and war."  If New England maidens start taking African men to their bosoms, then whom are the White men going to fuck?  If there is anything to his statement regarding the intimidating dimensions of the Black female reproductive organ, then Dr. Howard was obviously much too ashamed even to try pleasing a Black woman with his miniature, inadequate joystick.  Well, Denise LaSalle had some valuable advice for him:

 

The end of the "anti-miscegenation" laws does indeed seem to have resulted in a fairly large number of White women acting upon their fascination with Black men.

Feminists versus Mail-Order Brides

First off, the term "mail-order bride" is generally criticized by both owners and customers of international marriage agencies, but is still used by them as an easily recognizable term, particularly in an internet search engine.  The term may have originated in 19th century North America as men migrated west.  As very few women lived there at this time, the men sought to find women back East by writing letters to churches and publishing personal advertisements in magazines and newspapers. Courtship proceeded via the mail.  The same thing occurred among Japanese immigrants, as illustrated in the movie Picture Bride, and among European immigrants, as portrayed in the movie Sweet Land.

Cherry Blossoms, perhaps the best known of the international marriage agencies, started in 1973 with a monthly magazine that featured pictures of women (mostly from the Philippines) who were seeking husbands primarily in the United States.  Since 2001, Cherry Blossoms switched to an entirely web-based format.

TLC broadcast a fascinating television show called 90 Day Fiancé, which featured the stories of 4 international couples (4 American men and their foreign fiancées, who were in the United States on K-1 visas).  The couples had 90 days to get married, or the fiancée had to return to her home country.  When Tonya, the ex-wife of Louis (one of the men), asked him whether his fiancée (from the Philippines) was a "mail-order bride", he looked away uncomfortably, and said "No, she's not a mail-order bride", and then explained how he had found her on an internet dating site.  "Mail-order bride" is a sensitive term, but it will do, here, for now.

 
As previously mentioned, many American Feminists are quite hostile to the concept of heterosexual monogamous marriage.  "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle" is a well-known Steinemism.  And, of those Feminists who are up for heterosexual marriage, the demands on the husband can be quite rigorous.  For example, Pamela Clark published a list of 35 stipulations for men to support Feminism:

1. Do 50% (or more) of housework.
2. Do 50% (or more) of emotional support work in your intimate relationships and friendships.
3. Consume cultural products produced by women.
4. Give women space.
5. … but insert yourself into spaces where you can use your maleness to interrupt sexism.
6. When a woman tells you something is sexist, believe her.
7. Educate yourself about sexual consent and make sure there is clear, unambiguous communication of consent in all your sexual relationships.
8. Be responsible for contraception.
9. Get the HPV vaccine.
10. Have progressive name politics.

If you and your female partner decide that the institution of marriage is something you want to be involved with, be willing to both keep your existing surnames. If having a common surname with your spouse is important to you, be willing to change your surname and treat this as a preferable option to your spouse changing hers.

11. If you have children, be an equal parent.
12. Pay attention to and challenge informal instances of gender role enforcement.
13. Be mindful of implicit and explicit gendered power differentials in your intimate/domestic relationships with women…whether a partner or family members or roommates.
14. Make sure that honesty and respect guide your romantic and sexual relationships with women.
15. Don’t be an online bystander in the face of sexism.
16. Be responsible with money in domestic/romantic relationships.
17. Be responsible for your own health.
18. Don’t ogle or make comments about women. (i.e., Keep your tongue in your mouth and comments to yourself.)
19. Pay attention to the sex of experts and key figures presenting information to you in the media.
20. Ensure that some of your heroes and role models are women.
21. Praise the virtues and accomplishments of women in your life to others.
22. Have integrity with your male friends. (i.e., Don’t be a “bro.”)
23. Don’t treat your spouse like a “nag.” If she is “nagging,” you are probably lagging.
24. Know that acknowledging your own sexist opinions and stereotypes you hold is not enough. Do something about them.
25. Befriend women.
26. Find female mentors/leaders. (i.e., Be subordinate to women.)
27. When in a romantic relationship, be responsible for events and special dates associated with your side of the family.
28. Don’t police women’s appearance.
29. Offer to accompany female friends if they have to walk home alone at night…or in a public space where they may be likely to feel unsafe.
30. Inject feminism into your daily conversations with other men.
31. If you have a tendency to behave inappropriately toward women when you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, do not consume drugs or alcohol.
32. Be aware of the physical and emotional space you occupy, and don’t take up more space than you need.
33. Walk the walk about income inequality.
34. Get in the habit of treating your maleness as an unearned privilege that you have to actively work to cede rather than femaleness being an unearned disadvantage that women have to work to overcome.
35. Self-identify as a feminist.

Why don't they just tell us to wear a leash and to pee sitting down?  A lot of the international marriage agencies cite Feminism as a reason for men to seek wives abroad.  For example, from Hand-in-Hand, which offers Czech brides:

I've similarly heard men from Latin America describe our women as "men with tits."  A lot of American women don't wear skirts, but do generally seek to emphasize, and even exaggerate the appearance of the breasts.  So, "men with tits" is probably a more apt description than "men in skirts", at least for the American ladies.  Here is one woman's perspective on cultural differences:

Right there they kill any measure of self-reflection and mock the man as if he were operating on fear and an inferiority complex. In the one answer they don't realize they've supplied the real answer but are too self-absorbed and narcissistic to conceptualize it.

For decades most western women have been told they were special and that men couldn't live without them and so they didn't feel like they had to meet him halfway. So they treat their boyfriends and husbands more like personal assistants and barely paid day laborers than human beings. Asian women in my experience have not forgotten that men are human beings and we have value independent of a need for validation from them. They encourage our potential and can empathize with us when hard times arrive. They can also see beyond a selfish need to make everything about them and in doing so land men willing to listen to them and want to elevate them on merit and emotion.

Of course, the Feminists didn't care much for the "Unspoiled by Feminism" and "Culture of Support & Respect" memes used in Hand-in-Hand's marketing:

--Me thinks they don't mean respect of each other as equals. Subservient is probably what they're looking for.
--I just don't see how they mixed up those words. At the very least they could be honest about the "respect" they're selling!
--They would say that men and women are equal, but different. God and/or nature designed different roles for the sexes to play, and a good man respects his barefoot, pregnant, blowjob-giving, from-an-"exotic"-culture wife just fine.
--She births his children, raises them to his specifications, keeps house the way he likes, fucks how and when he likes, cooks foods he enjoys and has the dishes cleaned away promptly. And he occasionally compliments her for being "not like those ugly feminist bitches who don't know their place.
--What would be the female equivalent of this? I really think someone selling this should be smacked.  I mean clearly they didn't make it in the human trafficking business... or did they and this is their subtle(not so subtle) way of selling them off? I can't look anymore at it or I am going to try and spam that email with hate. SPOILED FEMINIST HATE!

Katie Baker of Jezebel, of course, didn't care much for the story:

One Utah man has bravely gone where no man has gone before: online, in search of a foreign bride who looks like a model but has the values of his grandmother. These matrimony-worthy prizes do not exist in the den of iniquity that is the United States, so he found her in Ukraine, and is now, happily, the King of overseas dating....

...both Adams and Adamchiyk seem to have found what they were looking for: Adamchiyk was married twice before to men who cheated (apparently, men don't cheat in America, and the streets are paved with cheese), and wanted a loyal spouse who would treat her with respect. She yearned to be a mother, and said she first fell in love with Adams when she saw his 6-year-old daughter, Vanessa.

Adams, on the other hand, was looking for a wife/mother who wasn't interested in his money or harboring "a fair amount of bitterness and anger" towards men (apparently, there are no misandrists overseas). First, he was scammed by someone he believed was a model (shucks). Then, he heard that Ukranian women were both beautiful and respectable: jackpot!! Eventually, he found Adamchiyk.

I'd like to keep ribbing on Adams, who was clearly searching for a compliant, deferential wife, not an equal — why else use a site where women don't have to pay? — and being so goddamn picky about it. ("He didn’t want women age 30 or younger because, in his experience, they’re interested in clubbing. He didn’t want a woman older than 36 because he believes most have already reared children and aren’t interested in mothering a young child.")...

...If he turns out to be a controlling dick, let's hope she's just in it for the visa. Ah, romance!

Well, in the Comment Section to the above YouTube video, Mr. Adams wrote:

So, I imagine that things are still going fine for them. Based upon Miss Clark's list (above), a man might be a "controlling dick" if he asked his wife not to nag him too much, or did something else that she regarded as a sign of insubordination.  It looks like Mr. Adams didn't change his surname to Adamchiyk, which must make him a misogynist at the very least.  As long as Mrs. Adams doesn't have any Feminists telling her how awful she has it, then they should be fine.

A fair question might be: if these men wanted to get married so badly, then why didn't they work harder to get themselves an American wife, with good, Feminist values?  I don't mean to speak for them (they are all such cute couples), but I think that most men would find Miss Clark's list of 35 stipulations to be not only discouraging, but a major boner-deflater.  Moreover, as I understand it, Feminists are not supposed to reward men for being "good." They might punish men who failed to live up to the Feminist standards of goodness. If a man is interested in a little hanky-panky: Feminists will have coitus with men to whom they are sexually attracted, and are not going to give it to anyone as a reward for being "good."  No man should feel "entitled", for any reason whatsoever.  As previously discussed, an American woman typically doesn't care for the "sweet, sensitive, respectful boyfriend in the new mold who asks her what she wants in bed", because "she is bored out of her mind and irritated by him."  American women generally prefer men who are sexually aggressive, which seems rather paradoxical given the Feminists' demand for compliance with their list of stipulations.

As to what these four gents might have encountered, had they pursued romantic relationships with American women, here are some comments about these men from Lipstick Alley:

According to our women, these gents are ugly, dumb as Hell, delusional, and gay.  And, their fiancées are much too pretty for them, so their fiancées are obviously faking it until their immigration status is settled.
   
Probably the only American women who would have been at all interested in any of these men would have been women who had hit "The Wall", and who were well aware of it.

Women who knew that their residual reproductive value was quickly approaching zero, and who were finally ready to swallow Lori Gottlieb's advice:

1. Most men, regardless of how old they might be, how ugly or handsome they might be, how much attention they pay to their own personal hygiene, or how much wealth they might possess, are attracted to healthy, nubile, attractive women between the ages of 18 and 29.

2. Healthy, nubile, attractive women between the ages of 18 and 29 know that most men are attracted to them, and can afford to flaunt it.

3. Where demand greatly outstrips supply, the market price is going to rise.  See my article on economics.

If you're a billionaire, like Flavio Briatore,

or some sort of sports star,

then you've got the pick of the litter. Women over 30 who remain sexually active are called "cougars", and guys may be creeped out when approached by a cougar. There are probably plenty of older and fatter women who are hungry for a bit of attention.  I'd be very surprised if James Woods' first wife was getting any wood at all these days.

If your target remains healthy, nubile, attractive women between the ages of 18 and 29, then you might want to take honest stock of what you have to offer them. You have a lot of competition, and if you think that you are coming up short, then you might consider seeking a bride abroad, where a woman who meets your requirements will be thrilled at what you have to offer. Or, give some thought to loosening your standards for potential partners in your home country.

Objectification and Foreskins

Perhaps one of the oddest forms of religious sexual objectification is the mutilation of the penis through the removal of the foreskin among Jews.  This, of course, dates back to Genesis 17:

This all seems like a strange thing to do.  I know full well that religions aren't supposed to make any sense, but how silly can they get?  "Wee!  Look at us!  We don't have foreskins!  You can see the whole glans penis, like the cap of a mushroom!  We've got a covenant with Yahweh!"  I previously discussed phallic symbols in national monuments and in certain religions; and, in another one, asexual objectification.  Perhaps, in Judaism, this is a means of emphasizing the masculinity of the Jewish concept of God.  Jewish girls are not similarly marked, and apparently have no role in the Covenant.  As mentioned in a prior post, some religions do incorporate female objectification.  In Judaism, the objectification is all male.  In fact, one daily Jewish prayer formula is as follows:

Blessed are You, God, our Lord, King of the universe, who has not made me a non-Jew.
Blessed are You, God, our Lord, King of the universe, who has not made me a woman.
Blessed are You, God, our Lord, King of the universe, who has not made me a servant.  

A Jewish male has only to behold his cock to be reminded of the first two lines of this little prayer.  On a fully intact penis, the glans is covered by the foreskin except when the penis is erect.

On the circumcised penis, this little symbol of the Covenant is perpetually exposed.  Jewish males thus carry a constant reminder of their godhead.  Some Christians might wear a cross as a pendant on a necklace, to objectify their religion.  All that a Jewish boy has to do is look at his dick to remind himself of his Covenant.  And, the mushroom shape (cap uncovered) remains, even when the penis is flaccid.  According to Jennifer Adele, the symbolism and cultural history surrounding the mushroom are impressive, and mushrooms "tend to symbolize male fertility and virility."  Robert Graves states that mushrooms had a profound importance in primitive religions.  Perhaps the best known and most widely distributed of the entheogenic mushrooms is Amanita muscaria, or the "fly agaric."

...In eastern Siberia, A. muscaria was used by both shamans and laypeople alike, and was used recreationally as well as religiously.  In eastern Siberia, the shaman would take the mushrooms, and others would drink his urine. This urine, still containing psychoactive elements, may be more potent than the A. muscaria mushrooms with fewer negative effects such as sweating and twitching, suggesting that the initial user may act as a screening filter for other components in the mushroom...

In Magic Mushrooms in Religion and Alchemy, Clark Heinrich sees evidence of the influence of Amanita muscaria in ancient Indian, Judaic and Christian beliefs.  Why, at the age of 99, would Abraham have imagined a conversation with God, where God told him to round up all his men and circumcise them?  It might have been the result of some sort of mushroom-induced hallucination.

To continue with the story of Abraham, Genesis 19:

And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre, and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, And said, "My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant: Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree: And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant.

And they said, "So do, as thou hast said."

And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said," Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth." And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it. And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

And they said unto him, "Where is Sarah thy wife?"

And he said, "Behold, in the tent."

And he said, "I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son." And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.

Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, "After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?"

And the Lord said unto Abraham, "Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?'  Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son."

Some may say that it was the magic of the circumcision which made it possible for Sarah to have pleasure with her 99-year-old lord once again.  Not only that, but in the very next chapter, Abimalech, the king of Gerar, was hitting on Sarah in a very serious way.  After Sarah eventually died at the age of 127, Genesis 25:

Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah. And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah....And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac. But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.  And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.

Abraham's first son was Ishmael (by Hagar).  Then, after his circumcision, from the age of 100 to 175, he sired Isaac (by his first wife, Sarah), six sons by his second wife (Keturah), and who-knows-how-many sons by who-knows-how- many concubines.  Man, that old dude could fuck.  I hope that I'll be that potent when I get to be his age.

Either it was mushrooms, or the circumcision.  Maybe Abraham's foreskin had been getting in the way.  King Solomon had a personal copulation cabinet of 700 wives and 300 concubines to service his circumcised penis.  According to Nathan Abrams, Jews account for the bulk of the male talent in pornographic films.  So, maybe it is the circumcision.  Except that most American Gentiles are also circumcised. 

Cordyceps sinensis is a mushroom species that is said to improve libido (in both men and women) and even to cure impotence.  I haven't been able to find any evidence of Amanita muscaria enhancing sexual performance, although I've been told that coitus while stoned can be quite an experience.   According to Robert Graves, the girl's line from Song of Solomon 2:

Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes

meant "Solomon must fortify his manhood with mushroom-juice laced with wine, the better to enjoy her young beauty."  According to Mr. Graves, the juice of Amanita muscaria (which still grows under the pines of Mount Tabor) can be laced with juice or wine, and the mushrooms, when dried, are fox-colored.  It seems plausible--I can't think of a better explanation for the verse, when the next line is "My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies."  She couldn't have been talking about literal foxes, any more than "he feedeth among the lilies" meant that he was out eating worms in the flower garden.  More likely, "lilies" would have been a metaphor for her labia.  So, if the mushrooms had anything to do with improving Abraham's sex life after the age of 99, then perhaps the circumcision, which rendered the penis more mushroom-shaped, was in token appreciation.
 
Of course, the Israelites/Jews are not the only tribal people to objectify their penises in ways that outsiders might find odd.  Behold, for example, these chaps from New Guinea:

Circumcision comes up again in Genesis 34:

And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel. And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, "Get me this damsel to wife."

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come. And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him. And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter: which thing ought not to be done.

And Hamor communed with them, saying, "The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife. And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you. And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein."

And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, "Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give. Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife."

And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister: And they said unto them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us: But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised; Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people. But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone."

And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem, Hamor's son.  And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.

And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying, "These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters. Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised. Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of their's be our's? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us."

And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city. And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males. And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out. The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister. They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field, And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.

And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house."

And they said, "Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?"

Some English translation have it that Prince Shechem raped Dinah.  But, it seems to have been more of a seduction than a rape.  Looking at some of the previously quoted passages from the Torah, the writers of Genesis might not have recognized a huge distinction between seduction and rape, as both represented a property crime.  Prince Shechem really liked Dinah.  Dinah may have had similar affection for Shechem, although her preferences seem not to have counted for anything.  Indeed, some Christians consider the moral of the story to be that "Dinah should have stayed home."  Shechem was a prince.  How many other options did a girl like Dinah have?  Especially at this point, after she had been deflowered?  Simeon and Levi went and ruined everything, not only for their sister, but for their father as well.

One of the strangest circumcision stories occurs in Exodus 4:

...And the Lord said unto Moses, "When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, 'Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn.'"

And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and sought to kill him. Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, "Surely a bloody husband art thou to me." So he let him go: then she said, "A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision."

And the Lord said to Aaron, "Go into the wilderness to meet Moses." And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him.  And Moses told Aaron all the words of the Lord who had sent him, and all the signs which he had commanded him. And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel: And Aaron spake all the words which the Lord had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people. And the people believed: and when they heard that the Lord had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped...

Right after persuading Moses (Mr. "Slow of Speech and Slow of Tongue" himself) to go to Egypt, and telling Moses that he was planning on hardening Pharoah's heart.  Moses' wife Zipporah thinks fast, and saves his life by slicing off their son's foreskin with a sharp stone.  Zipporah was a Midianite, and probably didn't think too much about Hebrew circumcision.  After that, the narrative proceeds as if this little, nearly-fatal incident had never happened.

Another fascinating foreskin fable occurs in 1 Samuel 18:

Michal, Saul's daughter, loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. And Saul said, "I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him." Wherefore Saul said to David, "Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain."

And Saul commanded his servants, saying, "Commune with David secretly, and say, 'Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law.'"

And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, "Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?"

And the servants of Saul told him, saying, "On this manner spake David."

And Saul said, "Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies". But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired.  Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

Michaelangelo obviously didn't read the Bible very closely: his David is uncircumcised.

Scalping was fairly common during warfare in North America, well into the nineteenth century. Confederate guerrillas led by William Anderson decorated their saddles with the scalps of slaughtered foes.  Ears served as trophies during the Vietnam War:

David paid for his first wife, Michal, with a basket-full of Philistine penises.  At least with penises, you knew that the victim was a male non-Israelite.  Scalps and ears could have come from anyone.  On the other hand, having a circumcised penis often ended up being fatal when the Nazis were looking for boys to murder during the twentieth century.

According to Frederick Hodges, the ancient Greeks greatly esteemed the foreskin.  Here is an ancient Greek image of an athlete toying with his foreskin:

According to this website,

...In Ancient Greece and various vassals of the Greek city states an uncircumcised, small penis was seen as a sign of nobility and cultural superiority, whereas a penis of a bigger size was regarded as vulgar and inappropriate...In the arts, small penis identified the ideal or intellectual aspect of the human male, whilst in theatre for example, the person playing the "fool" role wore something like an oversized phallus to indicate his stupidity, the idea being he was therefore closer to animals and less human than his opponent....

Getting back to the Bible, the two books of Maccabees (which are excluded as "apocryphal" from many Bibles) describe clashes between Greek and Jewish ideals during the Hellenistic period.  Maccabees 1:

This history begins when Alexander the Great, son of Philip of Macedonia, marched from Macedonia and attacked Darius, king of Persia and Media. Alexander enlarged the Greek Empire by defeating Darius and seizing his throne.  He fought many battles, captured fortified cities, and put the kings of the region to death. As he advanced to the ends of the earth, he plundered many nations; and when he had conquered the world, he became proud and arrogant. By building up a strong army, he dominated whole nations and their rulers, and forced everyone to pay him taxes.

When Alexander had been emperor for twelve years, he fell ill and realized that he was about to die. He called together his generals, noblemen who had been brought up with him since his early childhood, and he divided his empire, giving a part to each of them. 8 After his death, the generals took control, and each had himself crowned king of his own territory. The descendants of these kings ruled for many generations and brought a great deal of misery on the world.

The wicked ruler Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus the Third of Syria, was a descendant of one of Alexander's generals. Antiochus Epiphanes had been a hostage in Rome before he became king of Syria in the year 137.[i.e., 175 B.C.]

At that time there appeared in the land of Israel a group of traitorous Jews who had no regard for the Law and who had a bad influence on many of our people. They said, "Let's come to terms with the Gentiles, for our refusal to associate with them has brought us nothing but trouble."  This proposal appealed to many people, and some of them became so enthusiastic about it that they went to the king and received from him permission to follow Gentile customs. They built in Jerusalem a stadium like those in the Greek cities. They had surgery performed to hide their circumcision, abandoned the holy covenant, started associating with [or marrying] Gentiles, and did all sorts of other evil things...

Some Jews thought that the culture of the Greek invaders was really cool, and sought to emulate it.  Athletic competitions were very important to the Greeks, who competed in the buff.  Jewish boys wanted to do this, too, but were ashamed of their penises.  Jon Safran did a short bit about restoring his foreskin:

I don't know whether Mr. Safran stayed with the program and succeeded, but some men have apparently been pleased with the result.  Now, they can go out and participate in nude athletic contests without being embarrassed.  

The story continues:

...When Antiochus had firmly established himself as king, he decided to conquer Egypt and rule that country as well as Syria.  He invaded Egypt with a large fleet of ships and a powerful army, including chariots, elephants, and cavalry.  When the attack came, King Ptolemy of Egypt turned and fled, and many of his soldiers were killed.  Antiochus was able to capture the fortified cities of Egypt and plunder the whole land.

In the year 143,[169 B.C.] after the conquest of Egypt, Antiochus marched with a great army against the land of Israel and the city of Jerusalem.  In his arrogance, he entered the Temple and took away the gold altar, the lampstand with all its equipment, the table for the bread offered to the Lord, the cups and bowls, the gold fire pans, the curtain, and the crowns. He also stripped all the gold from the front of the Temple and carried off the silver and gold and everything else of value, including all the treasures that he could find stored there.  Then he took it all to his own country. He had also murdered many people and boasted arrogantly about it. There was great mourning everywhere in the land of Israel.

 Two years later Antiochus sent a large army from Mysia against the towns of Judea. When the soldiers entered Jerusalem, their commander spoke to the people, offering them terms of peace and completely deceiving them. Then he suddenly launched a fierce attack on the city, dealing it a major blow and killing many of the people.  He plundered the city, set it on fire, and tore down its buildings and walls.  He and his army took the women and children as prisoners and seized the cattle.

Then Antiochus and his forces built high walls and strong towers in the area north of the Temple, turning it into a fort.  They brought in a group of traitorous Jews and installed them there. They also brought in arms and supplies and stored in the fort all the loot that they had taken in Jerusalem. This fort became a great threat to the city...

...Antiochus now issued a decree that all nations in his empire should abandon their own customs and become one people. All the Gentiles and even many of the Israelites submitted to this decree. They adopted the official pagan religion, offered sacrifices to idols, and no longer observed the Sabbath.

The king also sent messengers with a decree to Jerusalem and all the towns of Judea, ordering the people to follow customs that were foreign to the country.  He ordered them not to offer burnt offerings, grain offerings, or wine offerings in the Temple, and commanded them to treat Sabbaths and festivals as ordinary work days.  They were even ordered to defile the Temple and the holy things in it.  They were commanded to build pagan altars, temples, and shrines, and to sacrifice pigs and other unclean animals there.  They were forbidden to circumcise their sons and were required to make themselves ritually unclean in every way they could, so that they would forget the Law which the Lord had given through Moses and would disobey all its commands.  The penalty for disobeying the king's decree was death.

The king not only issued the same decree throughout his whole empire, but he also appointed officials to supervise the people and commanded each town in Judea to offer pagan sacrifices.  Many of the Jews were ready to forsake the Law and to obey these officials. They defiled the land with their evil, and their conduct forced all true Israelites to hide wherever they could.

On the fifteenth day of the month of Kislev in the year 145,[167 B.C.] King Antiochus set up
The Awful Horror on the altar of the Temple, and pagan altars were built in the towns throughout Judea.  Pagan sacrifices were offered in front of houses and in the streets.  Any books of the Law which were found were torn up and burned, and anyone who was caught with a copy of the sacred books or who obeyed the Law was put to death by order of the king. Month after month these wicked people used their power against the Israelites caught in the towns.

On the twenty-fifth of the month, these same evil people offered sacrifices on the pagan altar erected on top of the altar in the Temple.  Mothers who had allowed their babies to be circumcised were put to death in accordance with the king's decree.  Their babies were hung around their necks, and their families and those who had circumcised them were put to death...

There was quite a struggle between, on one side, the Hellenized Jews and, on the other, the Conservative Jews, with Antiochus taking the side of the Hellenized Jews.  The writer of Maccabees 2 identifies Jason, a Hellenized Jew, as the primary villain.

...just as soon as Jason took over the office of High Priest, he made the people of Jerusalem change to the Greek way of life. He began by abolishing the favors that John had secured for the Jews from previous Syrian kings. (John was the father of the Eupolemus who later went to Rome to make an alliance and to establish ties of friendship.) Jason also did away with our Jewish customs and introduced new customs that were contrary to our Law. With great enthusiasm he built a stadium near the Temple hill and led our finest young men to adopt the Greek custom of participating in athletic events. Because of the unrivaled wickedness of Jason, that ungodly and illegitimate High Priest, the craze for the Greek way of life and for foreign customs reached such a point that even the priests lost all interest in their sacred duties. They lost interest in the Temple services and neglected the sacrifices. Just as soon as the signal was given, they would rush off to take part in the games that were forbidden by our Law. They did not care about anything their ancestors had valued; they prized only Greek honors...

Anyway, the Conservative Jews won, and, for a while, Judea became an independent kingdom under the Hasmonean Dynasty.  In The Antiquities of the Jews, Flavius Josephus describes John Hyrcanus' conquest of Idumea:

...Hyrcanus took also Dora and Marissa, cities of Idumea, and subdued all the Idumeans; and permitted them to stay in that country, if they would circumcise their genitals, and make use of the laws of the Jews; and they were so desirous of living in the country of their forefathers, that they submitted to the use of circumcision, and of the rest of the Jewish ways of living; at which time therefore this befell them, that they were hereafter no other than Jews... 

Gosh, such an odd fixation with the appearance of the penis.  Although not specifically mentioned in the Koran, male circumcision seems also to be an integral part of Islam, and, in some Islamic countries, female circumcision is also practiced.  Apparently, ISIS intends to force all women under the age of 50 (who are in Iraqi areas under its control--potentially 4 million victims) to undergo circumcision.  From Islam Question and Answer:

The most correct view is that it is obligatory in the case of men and Sunnah in the case of women. The difference between them is that in the case of men, it serves an interest which has to do with one of the conditions of prayer, namely purity (tahaarah), because if the foreskin remains, when the urine comes out of the urethra, some of it will collect there, and this causes burning and infection every time the person moves, and every time the foreskin is squeezed, some drops of urine come out, thus causing najaasah (impurity).

In the case of women, it serves a useful purpose which is to reduce desire. This is seeking perfection, not removing something harmful.

Looking at the 1955 Istanbul Pogrom, which the Turkish government instigated against Istanbul's 150,000-strong Greek minority (and which also targeted Jewish, Armenian and Georgian residents):

...A man who was fearful of being beaten, lynched or cut into pieces would imply and try to prove that he was both a Turk and a Muslim. "Pull it out and let us see," they would reply. The poor man would peel off his trousers and show his "Muslimness" and "Turkishness". And what was the proof? That he had been circumcised. If the man was circumcised, he was saved. If not, he was doomed. Indeed, having lied, he could not be saved from a beating. For one of those aggressive young men would draw his knife and circumcise him in the middle of the street and amid the chaos. A difference of two or three centimetres does not justify such a commotion... 

When the pogrom ended, a day later, 16 Greeks and one Armenian had died, 32 had been severely wounded, dozens of women had been raped and several men forcibly circumcised.  More craziness over foreskins.  ("My god is better than yours, and I'm better than you, and I can prove it!  Just look at my weiner!")  I'm not sure that Mohammed, or even Allah, would have whole-heartedly approved.  On the other hand, if Yahweh was cool with what Levi and Simeon did to the Hivites, then Allah might have winked at the Istanbul Pogrom.  Still, not very nice.  How would the Turks have liked being forcibly un-circumcised?

The issue of circumcision of converts to Christianity was discussed and settled at the Council of Jerusalem, which occurred some time around 50 A.D., as described in Acts 15:

Some men came from Judea to Antioch and started teaching the believers, “You cannot be saved unless you are circumcised as the Law of Moses requires.”  Paul and Barnabas got into a fierce argument with them about this, so it was decided that Paul and Barnabas and some of the others in Antioch should go to Jerusalem and see the apostles and elders about this matter.

They were sent on their way by the church; and as they went through Phoenicia and Samaria, they reported how the Gentiles had turned to God; this news brought great joy to all the believers. When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church, the apostles, and the elders, to whom they told all that God had done through them.  But some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and told to obey the Law of Moses.”

 

The apostles and the elders met together to consider this question. After a long debate Peter stood up and said, “My friends, you know that a long time ago God chose me from among you to preach the Good News to the Gentiles, so that they could hear and believe. And God, who knows the thoughts of everyone, showed his approval of the Gentiles by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he had to us.  He made no difference between us and them; he forgave their sins because they believed.  So then, why do you now want to put God to the test by laying a load on the backs of the believers which neither our ancestors nor we ourselves were able to carry?  No! We believe and are saved by the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they are.”

The whole group was silent as they heard Barnabas and Paul report all the miracles and wonders that God had performed through them among the Gentiles. When they had finished speaking, James spoke up: “Listen to me, my friends!  Simon has just explained how God first showed his care for the Gentiles by taking from among them a people to belong to him.  The words of the prophets agree completely with this. As the scripture says,

After this I will return, says the Lord,
and restore the kingdom of David.
I will rebuild its ruins
and make it strong again.
And so all the rest of the human race will come to me,
all the Gentiles whom I have called to be my own.
So says the Lord, who made this known long ago.

“It is my opinion,” James went on, “that we should not trouble the Gentiles who are turning to God.  Instead, we should write a letter telling them not to eat any food that is ritually unclean because it has been offered to idols; to keep themselves from sexual immorality; and not to eat any animal that has been strangled, or any blood.  For the Law of Moses has been read for a very long time in the synagogues every Sabbath, and his words are preached in every town.”

Paul's opinion won the day, and Gentile converts do not have to get snipped.

Cum to think of it, the concept of the Resurrection, where Jesus bursts out of his tomb and ascends into Heaven, is central to Christianity.  What more apt objectification of the Resurrection exists than the glans emerging boldly from the prepuce of an uncircumcised penis, thence to enter the glorious, heavenly abyss, there to spawn new life?  Circumcision ruins the metaphor.

Mushrooms do represent something of an intersection, in that they serve not only as powerful phallic symbols, but also objectify the Resurrection.   Here is a brief video which provides some mycological examples in Christian art:

Anyway, in the very next chapter of Acts:

Paul traveled on to Derbe and Lystra, where a Christian named Timothy lived. His mother, who was also a Christian, was Jewish, but his father was a Greek.  All the believers in Lystra and Iconium spoke well of Timothy.  Paul wanted to take Timothy along with him, so he circumcised him. He did so because all the Jews who lived in those places knew that Timothy's father was Greek...

Imagine a similar reaction to an itinerant preacher today:  "Hold on!  Before you get started, we want to look at your penis!"  Privy members must have been considerably less privy back in the day.  The Christian world was largely spared this indignity, at least until the end of the nineteenth century in the Anglophone world.  In 1890, Dr. Jonathan Hutchinson wrote:

...It is surely not needful to seek any recondite motive for the origin of the practice of circumcision. No one who has seen the superior cleanliness of a Hebrew penis can have avoided a very strong impression in favour of removal of the foreskin. It constitutes a harbour for filth, and is a constant source of irritation. It conduces to masturbation, and adds to the difficulties of sexual continence. It increases the risk of syphilis in early life, and of cancer in the aged. I have never seen cancer of the penis in a Jew, and chancres are rare...

and

...My late colleague, Mr Curling, I know held the opinion that circumcision was of advantage as preventing the tendency to masturbation. At one time he tried to collect facts in order to institute a comparison between Jews and others in respect to that habit, but the distasteful nature of the inquiry I believe caused him to abandon it. It is indeed one upon which it is impossible to collect statistics. General impressions are all that can be had. I have myself, from considerable experience, formed a strong opinion that Jewish young men do not suffer nearly so frequently as others from the maladies which we associate more or less definitely with masturbation and nocturnal emissions. We must remember, however, that in their case we are dealing with the circumcision of infants as preventive, not with that of adults as curative. Under the latter conditions the operation is far less hopeful. Still, I am inclined to believe that it may often accomplish much, both in breaking the habit as an immediate result, and in diminishing the temptation to it subsequently. I know that the reply from specialists will be that the disorder is in the nervous system, and not in the organs, and this no doubt is in part true. The reiterated complaints and confessions of young men, however, force on me the conviction that he habit in question is very injurious to the nerve-tone, and that it frequently originates and keeps up maladies which but for it might have been avoided or cured. I confess I see no reason why a man admitted into an asylum for ailments associated with that vice should not be allowed such chance of relief as the operation offers. I may indeed go further than this and avow my conviction that measures more radical than circumcision would, if public opinion permitted their adoption, be a true kindness to many patients of both sexes...

 People were confined to asylums, for masturbation and nocturnal emissions?  As recently as 1994, Dr. Jocelyn Elders was fired from her position as Surgeon General, for having mentioned masturbation.  This obviously remains a touchy subject for the still-puritanical Anglophone world to handle.  With the subsequent rise of the internet, as mentioned in a previous post, American males have been accused of masturbating more than ever. Perhaps foreskins would have enhanced the pleasure, and guaranteed that we never left the computer.  Sadly, most of us will never know.  Look at Ernest Borgnine:

At 91, the legendary actor was still going strong.  He was born in 1917, to Italian-immigrant parents, so he might have escaped the snip.  Fox News personalities giggle at the topic, but, some time ago, his pastime might have led to his confinement in an asylum.

John Harvey Kellogg, who invented corn flakes to feed to his sanitarium inmates, promoted circumcision as a means of inhibiting masturbation.  Now, circumcision is primarily an income booster for obstetricians and pediatricians.  None of them are going to attempt to talk parents of newborn boys out of getting it done.
